These families ran personal marathons to keep the flame.
For over five years Bruce and I traveled America seeking out surviving children
and other family members of lighthouse keepers of the old U.S. Lighthouse
Service. Through personal interviews and follow-up phone calls, letters,
and other correspondence over the years, we pulled together what we feel
are some of the best stories and pictures remaining of the rare remnants
of this era. You'll laugh and cry over stories like those of the Owens at
Pigeon Point who witnessed an American WWII battle with enemy destroyers,
and Annie of Passage Island who left a buried treasure when her keeper-father
was transferred, and John's story about painting the Bodie Island Lighthouse,
and Rany's painting the red brick! at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse just before
the lighthouse inspector's visit. See what each family fixed for dinner and
test one of the families' favorite recipes. We have had wonderful comments
from readers who appreciate the soulful stories within the covers of this
book. Along with the priceless family pictures from the 1920s and 30s are
beautiful color photographs of Bruce Roberts, retired director of photography
at Southern Living magazine.

Exactly what I was looking for!!!
American Lighthouses: A Comprehensive Guide was exactly what I was looking
for. A way to find lighthouses during my travels. My AAA tour books and maps
did not mark the lights and I found I had driven very close by some of the
oldest and most beautiful lights in the country without even knowing it.
Not again with this guild, divided up by states, I should not miss of the
majestic old lighthouses.
