Hello,
I am the new captain of the S/V MIMI. MIMI is the star of the 1980's PBS
television series "The Voyage Of The MIMI" and "The Second Voyage Of The
MIMI", both series starring Ben Affleck of the recent movie "Good Will Hunting".
Today the MIMI curriculum is used in over 21,000 school systems throughout
the U.S. We, Three Mates' MIMIconnection, operate an educational outreach
program and work with over 20,000 school kids annually, along the East Coast.
MIMI, alas, is a ketch rigged Brittney Dundee and was built in 1931 in Camaret,
France to work and withstand the rough waters of the North and Baltic Seas.
She was built to carry heavy cargos throughout the canal system of Europe,
not to sail well. "Just carry the weight and get it there." She was also
used as a tuna trawler, fishing under sail. I cannot truly say that she sails
very well.
She has a great history, too, even before Ben Affleck came into her life.
During WWII she was confiscated and used by the German Army to supply troops
in shallow areas which deeper draft navy vessels could not enter, her draft
is 8'. When it looked as though the Allies were going to enter Germany in
1945, very uncharcteristiclly of the Germans, they did not burn her, but
simply tied her to a tree in a mudflat and left her.
My name is George Story, yes, I am a member of that "Story" family so deeply
rooted in shipbuilding history of Essex, MA. Both my father and my Grandfather,
and his and his, were born in Essex. My Grandfather was a shipwrght and ship's
chaulker for old A. D. Story and later Dana Story before being drafted into
the Boston Navy Yard during WWII where he eventually retired from. I learned
more about the Gloucesterman Schooners at his knee than anyone has a right
to ever learn. I truly belived, as a young child, that there was no other
type vessel worth sailing upon than that of a two master Gloucesterman Schooner.
I was a schooner snob most of my life.
TRADER, I know, buying and working a ketch; but, to know MIMI is to love
MIMI. It does not take long to fall in love with this 68 year old girl.
