Schooner Nor'Wester

Tom and Clara Church of Stoughton, Wisconsin, own Nor'Wester, a 28,000 lb. displacement wooden schooner built in 1926 by Heming Larsen in Marinette, Wisconsin for the Commodore of the Milwaukee Yacht Club, N.L. Telander. She was built along with a sister ship, Nonnette, to John Alden design 274. There were a total of five or six schooners built to design 274, all built in 1926! Nor-Wester's port is Madison, WIsconsin, although she is berthed in Milwaukee, on one of the rivers off of Lake Michigan. She actively participates in the educational programs of Schooner Wisconsin, a giant schooner project building a huge 3 masted schooner in Milwaukee. Clara and Tom found Nor'Wester about ten years ago in a Waukegan, Illinois boat yard. She looked mightly disheveled until Tom got a hold of her! He replaced 85% of her frames, 80% of her ribs, and the entire wooden false keel assembly! TOm said he bought her name, spars and sails! She is beautifully restored and her black hull glistens on the water, while her spars are all varnished fir and her decks covered in teak! Her rebuilt cabin house and spray rails are all done in varnished mahogany and her bronze ports gleam dully in the sun. She is 38' LOD with a bowsprit and boomkin, a Marconi rigged main sail and a gaff rigged foresail!
