Kitty
Originally built to transport cargo along the
East Coast and to the continent, Kitty was a working barge until
1938, predominantly used to carry grain including barley, malt
and cattle feed. During the two World Wars she was temporarily
withdrawn from trading.
By the late 1950’s the modern motor coasters were driving
sailing barges out of trade, and many barges were stripped of
their masts and sails and used as a timber lighters or left to
rot. Kitty was fortunate and was de-rigged and used as a timber
lighter until 1964 when she was bought and re-rigged for charter
work.
Kitty has been sailed and operated in the Solent from the
late Seventies and was not fitted with an engine until the early
Eighties. She remains fully capable of sailing with her unique
and authentic spars and sails now used solely for passenger
charters from Port Solent.
